Most competitors I speak to have a much-loved Ballroom dress that they hang on to even though it’s perhaps tired and has had too much competition exposure. For busy competitors, it really doesn’t make sense to hang on to old dresses as they are assets that lose value the longer you own them and the more outings they get (just like cars!). It’s actually much better to sell a dress after a successful season in order to fund the next one. An alternative to this approach is to give your dress a makeover.
From a number of perspectives, cost and ethical consumption being the predominant ones, there is real value in spending some time and money on good quality dresses to give them a new lease of life. Investing in them will enhance their value and saleability on the second hand market should you decide that you can part with them.
At Obsession Dancewear we can help you transform an old dress so that, to your friends and dance colleagues, it looks like you have invested in a brand new garment. Typically a dress makeover will cost 50%-80% less than purchasing a new dress and so it is an attractive option for a dress that fits well and is really loved.
Examples of transformations that may be possible for your dress include:
- remove chiffon floats and replace with contrasting colour chiffon floats in a different design
- add contrast ostrich feather cuffs
- add contrast ostrich feather floats
- add feature rooster feather and chiffon floats
- restoning lost stones (possible for popular stones like Jet or Crystal AB but may be challenging for rarer colours)
- apply additional stoning (where the original stoning design is minimal) to the bodice, sleeves, cuffs etc
- add feature ostrich or rooster feather to the bust line
- add ostrich feather to the hem (a costly option as a full ballroom skirt requires 4+ boas but provides a dramatic effect/transformation)
